Salinas police announce grant extension, $198,000 cannabis‑tax grant and planned NIBIN upgrade

Commander Gabriel Gonzalez, speaking for the chief, told the committee the department received a no‑cost extension on an ORT grant that pushes grant activity through Dec. 31, 2027. “This grant was originally slated to go and be funded through 12/01/2026, but we have received a no cost extension for this grant for 1 additional year,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said the department plans to request budget funding to sustain two investigative specialist positions after the grant ends because the positions were not approved in the city’s budget. He also listed grants coming to council: a planned $300,000 DOJ NIBIN modernization grant to replace aging ballistic‑information technology, a CHP cannabis‑tax grant of $198,000 to fund impaired‑driving enforcement (including 25 enforcement operations and a new motorcycle and enforcement vehicle), and two OTS grants for selective traffic enforcement ($83,000) and pedestrian/bicycle safety (about $100,000). Gonzalez said staff will present more details to council before final acceptance.
