June crash report: 285 crashes in Athens-Clarke County, one fatality reported

Transportation & Public Works presented the county crash summary for June 2026: 285 crashes countywide, 74 with injuries, 113 total injuries, four pedestrian-involved crashes and three bicycle-involved crashes. The data came from the Georgia traffic crash repository and a staff-prepared crash report.

Jason, the TPW presenter, summarized the locations of serious crashes and noted the single fatal crash occurred on Lexington Road near East Meadow Drive where a left-turning driver struck a moped rider; the moped operator later died of their injuries. "The fatal crash was located on Lexington Road, near the airport on the East Side," the presenter said while reviewing the map of serious-injury and fatal crash locations.

Staff walked commissioners through additional serious-injury events: multiple serious outcomes on Lexington Road, a serious bicycle crash at Prince Avenue and Findlay, and a pedestrian hit-and-run on Gainesville Road where the driver was later arrested after license plate information was used to obtain footage. The report included a row-level narrative with injury coding (K,A,B,C,O) and described a Danville Road crash involving young drivers leaving a party and multiple injuries.

Commissioners discussed contributing factors and countermeasures: staff described the department's safe-systems approach and noted that safer engineering, vehicle/bicycle visibility (lights, reflectors) and enforcement programs (distributing lights and locks, targeted outreach) are complementary parts of the safety strategy. Staff said the department supplied lights and locks to donated bikes and discussed options to distribute lights via PD or the multimodal center.

Staff committed to follow up on select narrative details (citations, influence of impairment) where the report did not specify those items. A copy of the June crash report is the basis for the figures reported to the commission.
