Athens in Motion plan revision approved for City Commission review

The Athens in Motion Commission voted to approve a revised Athens in Motion bike-and-pedestrian plan that staff will present to the Mayor and Commission in an Aug. 11 work session and on agenda-setting Aug. 18.

"This is the Athens in Motion plan revision that will be presented to the Mayor and Commission," the chair said as the commission moved and seconded the motion to approve the draft with minor outstanding edits. Commissioners emphasized that remaining items are typographical or photo replacements and said staff should supply a final draft to the manager's office for agenda packets.

Commissioners and staff discussed presentation logistics: staff said Toole will lead the Aug. 11 presentation and the Commission will receive printouts of slides beforehand so members can review before deliberation. Staff described three formal options the Mayor and Commission may take when the item reaches agenda setting: accept the updated plan, reject it and continue using the prior plan, or form a commission to define alternate language or ask for revisions.

Several commissioners raised content details to be corrected before the public presentation: ordering of commissioner names, updating the title to indicate a "draft 2025 update," fixing the Danielsville Road spelling, and replacing an image that commissioners said could send the wrong safety message (a child doing a wheelie). Staff agreed to send an updated logo file and correct typographical and photo issues.

The motion to approve the plan (moved by Teresa and seconded by Erin) passed by voice vote; no opposition was recorded in the meeting transcript. The Chair said commission members intend to attend the Aug. 11 presentation and split representation for agenda-setting and the voting meeting if needed.
