West Point to notify about police email breach affecting about 3,000 people

Mr. Hudgins, a town staff member, told the Town Council the town investigated an unauthorized March intrusion into Police Department email accounts and that an independent cyber security review and the town's insurer found potentially sensitive information might have been exposed.
"Notifications will be distributed by a third‑party administrator and a call center will be available to answer questions," Mr. Hudgins said, and he advised residents with additional concerns to contact Town Hall. He said the investigation determined that notifications would go to approximately 3,000 individuals whose information appeared in the affected accounts.
The investigation identified types of potentially exposed data that may include Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers and passport information, Mr. Hudgins said, but the review did not tie specific items to particular individuals. Council member Ms. Bohannon asked whether all affected people were Town residents; Mr. Hudgins responded that notifications are being sent to individuals whose information appeared in the affected email accounts and are not limited to Town residents.
The council did not take formal action during the work session beyond acknowledging the update; Mr. Hudgins said the town will rely on the third‑party administrator and the offered call center to handle inquiries and that additional steps will be coordinated with Town Hall as needed.
