District outlines supports for undocumented students, cites Plyler and FERPA

Superintendent Chris told the board the district is taking proactive steps to reassure undocumented students and their families after recent federal actions. He cited Plyler v. Doe to remind trustees that "any student regardless of their immigration status in any state must must have the right for to a free public education," said the district does not collect immigration or legal-status records, and emphasized confidentiality obligations under FERPA.
Chris described measures already taken: reissuing a safe-haven resolution originally passed Nov. 20, sending staff the California attorney general's quick-reference guide, compiling a county resource clearinghouse, coordinating with community partner Corazon for referrals and legal assistance, and ensuring bilingual mental-health supports (naming Corey Caicley at elementary sites and Kim Harris at the high school) with drop-in wellness-center availability. He also said the district is arranging administrator training and will develop a central resource for families.
