Ileton council delays California Pallets expansion after residents raise noise, fire and traffic concerns

The Ileton City Council paused action on Resolution 09-25, a conditional-use permit for California Pallets, after extensive public comment raising concerns about noise, toxic dust from pallet shredding, truck routing through residential streets and fire-safety around an adjacent water facility. Contract planner Gary Price told the council the proposal expands an existing pallet assembly and shredding operation, adds a second access on Jackson Street and includes conditions for a north-side noise curtain, limits on outdoor pneumatic nailing and daytime-only operation of the wood shredder (staff recommended 10 a.m.–1 p.m.).
Residents told the council the grinder and large trucks could harm schools and nearby homes. "We have a condition that requires that the applicant get approval from the air district," Gary Price said, noting that the use permit would be contingent on air-district sign-off on dust mitigation. Alexander Lopez, the owner, said the company uses only its own wood waste and that treated pallets are mostly food-grade; he added the grinder runs about 45 minutes per load. The council directed staff to work with the applicant to add a traffic plan, clarify hours and strengthen fire- and noise-related conditions, and voted to continue the item to the next regular meeting to incorporate those conditions.
