MDE official outlines permitting role for data centers to Baltimore County staff

Zach, a Maryland Department of the Environment representative, told Baltimore County staff the states environmental agency typically becomes involved in data-center projects at the permitting stage. "Where the department really comes into this is is with respect to permitting," he said, noting that most oversight the agency provides concerns water- and air-related permits.
Zach said the permit questions for data centers are often the same regulatory categories used for other large industrial facilities stormwater, erosion and sediment control, and wetlands. He offered MDE assistance for local technical questions and suggested the county is likely to learn about development interest before the state because developers frequently approach counties first; state involvement usually follows during formal permitting.
