The Defiance City Council on July 28 adopted an ordinance authorizing a contract to improve Riverside Cemetery, including constructing a drive and developing additional lots in a grassy area identified as Section 39. The council cited $175,000 in capital funds allocated in last year’s budget to begin the work and to continue preparations for a columbarium.
Mick Sobiax, who read the ordinance caption to the council, said the measure "approves a contract to put a drive through there so you can get cars back at night when they are conducting funeral services." After the caption reading, the council moved to adopt the ordinance and members answered in the affirmative during a roll-call sequence. The presiding officer declared, "This motion is adopted."
Council discussion as recorded in the meeting emphasized that the funds were part of the prior-year capital allocation and that the drive and Section 39 expansion are intended to increase lot availability and improve access. The ordinance included an emergency declaration as read aloud during the meeting. The council adopted the measure with all present members voting yes; President McMasters was noted as absent earlier in the meeting.
