Austin Nakamoto and Mark of Hermosa Cyclery delivered a short safety talk emphasizing that regular maintenance is critical for electric bicycles. "A well maintained bike is a safe bike," Nakamoto said, framing the session as a reminder for riders to check brakes and other systems.
Mark, who identified himself as representing Hermosa Cyclery, told listeners that one of the biggest safety concerns with e-bikes is stopping ability because many electric models are heavier and faster than conventional bikes. "I'm Mark from Hermosa Cyclery here to talk to you about the safety concerns about riding e bikes," he said, adding that shops receive frequent requests to adjust brakes because pads wear faster on these bikes.
Mark demonstrated a common cable-activated disc brake found on many e-bikes and explained a basic adjustment technique: backing out the adjusting barrel increases cable tension and can increase braking power, and a locking ring should be turned against the brake lever to keep the barrel from moving. He pointed to a worn pad and said, "You have this brake pad here which is completely worn down to the metal," then contrasted it with a new pad that has visible friction material.
The presenters urged riders to inspect brake pads and have worn components replaced before they reach metal, and to seek professional service when unsure how to adjust cable tension or secure the locking ring. No formal actions or votes were reported during this brief talk; the session closed after the demonstration.
