The Hermosa Beach board approved two memoranda of understanding to place higher‑education students in the district. One agreement with Loyola Marymount University will allow placement of a graduate student intern in the counseling program; separate agreements with California State University, Dominguez Hills will permit placement of a graduate counseling intern and a student teacher.
Staff described the arrangements as beneficial recruitment tools. "It's like a try to buy situation," a board member said, noting that hosting interns often leads to future hires. Board members asked whether the district had teachers willing to mentor student teachers; staff said placements are matched once a candidate is identified and that these MOUs simply allow the district to accept placements when the universities identify students.
The motions to approve the MOUs were moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Board members expressed support for expanding opportunities that can help recruit teachers and counselors for district classrooms.
