Hermosa Beach preschool expands from one classroom to two; district highlights early‑learning focus

Hannah Ford updated the board on the growth and programming of the Hermosa Beach City School District preschool program. She said the program opened in August 2023 with one classroom of 18 students, expanded to a second classroom in January 2024, and by August 2024 began the school year with two full classrooms. Ford described continued capacity increases and recent expansion of the Dolphin Cove outdoor play area.
“We focus heavily on those school readiness skills, such as independence and daily routines,” Ford said, noting her staff’s emphasis on early literacy, early math foundations, science exploration and social‑emotional learning. Board members praised the program and asked whether most preschool students moved into the district’s Transitional Kindergarten program; Ford said a high percentage did, though she did not provide a specific percentage.
Board members thanked Ford for the presentation and noted the program’s positive family feedback. The district said it will continue to invest in staff professional development and family engagement to sustain quality as enrollment grows.
