Vernonia board hears plans for new 6–12 math curriculum and targeted interventions

Administrators told the board they are moving toward selecting a new 6—2 math curriculum and expanding targeted math interventions for students below grade level. The district described intervention structure for middle grades: small groups during the last hour and 20 minutes of the day or targeted periods, with daily 30-minute interventions for students identified by STAR Math outcomes. Staff will use materials and platforms (including IXL) tied to STAR diagnostic data to create individualized practice and track mastery. Administrators also said they will run interim assessments with DOK 3'4 focus to better mirror state testing and to build student familiarity with the Smarter Balanced format.
Board members asked about staffing and the challenge of finding specialized math support; administrators said they are assigning existing staff and hiring tutors as needed for after-school support. The district intends to offer community review sessions in March for curriculum samples before an April order.
