District outlines safety plan: SRO staffing, weapon-detection devices and vape pilots

Chief Walker told the board the Department of Safety and Security will staff all campuses and deploy weapon-detection devices at high schools and middle schools on day one, and provide coverage for athletic events. "All of our high schools and middle schools will have all of their weapon detection devices ready for day 1," Chief Walker said in the presentation, adding that detection devices will also be used at stadiums for upcoming athletic events.
Board members asked for follow-up reports on device usage and on vaping, and Chief Walker said intra-district pilots are testing detection in restrooms and a reporting system is in place. Staff said the department will work with individual schools to finalize staffing and clearances for SROs and campus security officers and will share periodic reports on device usage and outcomes with the board.
