PEC outlines option to build a local wastewater treatment plant to serve new growth

Trevor Kaufman outlined a second long-term option if gravity improvements prove infeasible because of the Wichita discharge restriction: build a new wastewater treatment plant sized to receive new growth area flows. Kaufman said the plant concept would centralize collection from the northwest/northeast growth areas and locate the plant near a low-point creek so treated effluent could be discharged to that waterway after required verifications and permitting.
Kaufman cautioned that a treatment plant reduces the need for extended north-south interceptors but still requires a significant initial footprint and environmental review. He explained that while components inside the plant can be phased to add capacity over time, the plant’s footprint and related permitting steps must be planned up front, which makes timing and funding decisions the most challenging part of the sewer strategy.
