District assessment presentation shows districtwide gains; Fitch Mountain elementary flagged as a standout

Tiffany Dougherty, director of curriculum and instruction, framed the CAST/CAASPP data as "the story behind the data" and cautioned that CAASPP is one point in time among many measures. She told trustees the district rose four percentage points overall in met/exceeded rates for ELA and math and that science increased 13 percentage points districtwide. "This shows incremental progress over time that everyone in this district is contributing to," she said.
Dougherty highlighted Fitch Mountain Campus as a notable outlier: "At Fitch Mountain Campus, 75% of 5th graders met or exceeded on the math CAST," compared with 36% statewide and 28% in Sonoma County for that grade. The director also pointed to double‑digit gains at the junior high in ELA and an 8‑point gain for students who have ever been classified as English learners ("ever ELs"), which Dougherty said contributes to closing performance gaps. Trustees asked for clarification on cohort growth and how PLCs and shared assessments supported the gains. Dougherty credited common formative assessments, PLC work and project‑based learning for many of the improvements.
