The Vernonia City Council met in work session March 30 to review a draft timber management plan for city-owned forest parcels and to give staff direction on next steps. Chair opened the meeting at 6:10 p.m. and the council approved the agenda before hearing staff present the plan.
Staff described the plan’s purpose and structure, saying the intent is to “manage them effectively for the public good and be stewards of the resource,” and noted that several sections contain placeholders where council policy decisions will be required. The plan includes an executive summary, site-specific overviews, soils data from the Columbia County soil survey, and a forest management section that staff flagged as the critical part where council must decide actions for each track.
Councilors and staff agreed on several near-term tasks: staff will add legal parcel descriptions and survey materials prepared by consultant KLS, amend the soils section for clarity, and schedule site visits so councilors can see conditions in person. Staff proposed adding a management timeline (example window 2028–2032 for some actions) in the appendix to signal when stands approach recommended treatment windows.
The meeting closed with an agreement to return the revised plan for a workshop after members have toured the parcels and provided edits. The chair adjourned the meeting at 7:24 p.m.
