Committee approves hazard-mitigation grant to protect lakeshore sewer interceptor

Engineer Jump described a multi-year effort to secure Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds, saying the Lakeshore interceptor — built in the 1930s — is “susceptible to wave action” where it runs beneath the lake and that the project will add revetment near High Avenue South and remove vulnerable manholes to reduce the risk of failures that would affect wastewater plant operations.
Alder Kelly asked whether proposed shoreline work, particularly around Broadway and Clara, would limit beach access; Jump responded that the redesign focuses on storm-sewer outfalls and “won't restrict beach access at all.” Kelly also raised safety concerns about dead trees along an access trail to the wastewater plant; Jump said most of those trees are likely to be removed as part of the work. The committee approved the resolution authorizing acceptance of the grant funds by motion and unanimous vote.
Staff said the project has been under development for more than three years and faced delays at federal and state agencies; the aim is to protect critical sewer infrastructure and reduce the risk of service interruptions to nearby residents.
