Attorney Majors told the Public Works Committee that the city’s vacation ordinance fee “has not been updated in approximately 20 years” and recommended setting the fee to cover the city’s actual publication and staff processing costs, with personal service costs billed later once known.
The recommendation includes changing code language to allow service costs to be billed after they are known. Alder Kelly supported using that approach as an interim step and asked whether fees could be moved out of the municipal code into a web-published fee schedule so they could be updated annually; Majors said finance is conducting a comprehensive review and the long-term goal is a published schedule updated each year. The committee approved the ordinance amendment by motion and unanimous vote.
The city clerk announced no public comments were made on the item during the meeting. The action was procedural and is intended to align the filing fee with actual city costs while staff completes a broader fee-schedule project.
