Board approves curriculum spending, cabinetry change orders and chief business officer contract

At its Dec. 11 meeting the Hermosa Beach City School District board approved multiple operational items: the purchase of Foundations literacy materials using one‑time learning recovery block grant funds, cabinet installations at Vista and View schools through the California Uniform Public Construction Cost Accounting Act (CUPCCA/CMAS), a CMAS change order for Valley School, and the employment contract for the district's chief business officer.
Staff said the Foundations purchase uses one‑time learning recovery funds and will supply consumables for TK–3 for multiple years. The board approved the CMAS change order for omitted cabinetry described by staff; the presenter stated the change order cost as $13,067 for the additional cabinetry. The board also approved a contract for Paula Montalvo as chief business officer covering Jan. 1, 2025 through June 30, 2028, with paid vacation, benefits and an automobile allowance; trustees approved the item by voice vote.
Board members asked logistical questions about storage for consumables and the timing of expenditures. Staff noted the learning recovery grant carries a spending incentive to expend funds this fiscal year or fold expenditures into LCAP reporting.
