Deputy Director Christian Getz said the planning commission recommended evaluating the parcel as part of the Canyon Park subarea update to ensure employment capacity and housing goals remain balanced.
Councilors asked about the implications for employment unit targets, subarea boundaries and traffic; some members supported folding the request into the Canyon Park work to allow holistic analysis, while others cautioned it could change growth allocations and asked for clear analysis of where employment capacity would be relocated. Mayor Thompson and several councilors emphasized they preferred a mixed‑use approach rather than a wholesale conversion to low‑density housing.
"We should consider the site as part of the Canyon Park subarea plan so we can consider both employment and housing and find the right balance," Getz said. Staff will include the application in the Canyon Park work plan and return with analysis and draft language for council consideration.
