Nick Warner, executive director of the Winooski Valley Park District, and Lawrence Cote, operations lead, presented to the council a brief overview of the district’s mission and holdings. Warner said the district partners with eight municipalities (Essex Junction most recently joined) and focuses on acquiring and permanently protecting conservation lands while ensuring maintenance capacity: “We have a portfolio of over 1,700 acres, over 18 properties that’s been incrementally growing,” he said.
Warner described operating funding (town assessments cover a large share of core staff and operations), volunteer and grant partnerships, and a grants portfolio the district manages (about $500,000). He also named several prospective projects the district is pursuing with partners, including the so‑called Jacob parcel (a 29‑acre peninsula across the river) and a canoe‑launch discussion that could increase public access to the Lower Winooski. Council thanked the district for the materials and indicated continued support; no action items were required tonight.
