Lewis County commissioners affirmed a six-month moratorium under Resolution 26-245 on the establishment of family burial grounds while staff assess the local implications of Substitute House Bill 2239 and develop proposed local regulations. Natalie Kamenicki, senior long-range planner with Community Development, told the board, "The moratorium provides staff with time to evaluate the impacts of the new legislation and development and develop local regulations to implement its provisions." She also said, "The bill became effective on June 16."
Kamenicki said the moratorium was established pursuant to RCW 36.70A.390, which requires a public hearing on such actions; staff said they anticipate returning with proposed code regulations and recommendations by the end of October. The board closed the public hearing with no formal testimony and approved the resolution by a 3-0 vote.
