Commissioners press staff on land‑use designations and visioning for city‑owned parcels

Planner Cameron Colvin told the commission that many city-owned sites primed for redevelopment in the prior downtown plan have been sold and that a smaller set of redevelopment sites remain downtown. Colvin said the city is contracting with an urban-design firm to provide visuals and charrettes for key sites (Lot C, F and G) to help communicate community vision. "They'll be helping us develop some visuals to help communicate the community vision, and also exploring some of those redevelopment concepts for key sites," Colvin said.
Several commissioners said the city should codify expectations for city-owned parcels so public goals are not lost when sites are sold to private developers. One commissioner recommended inviting design competitions or making clearer programmatic asks (for grocery stores, plazas, or passageways) when using municipal land to achieve placemaking outcomes. Staff confirmed the firm has been selected and contracting is in progress.
