Select Board hears Emergency Management Ordinance; EMA director reports volunteer, sheltering and RAVE growth

The Select Board opened a public hearing March 19 on a proposed Emergency Management Ordinance and heard an overview from EMA Director Phil Caruso. Caruso said the ordinance augments existing emergency resources, assigns departmental responsibilities in an Operations Plan and helps the town manage resources and facilities during emergencies.
Caruso also reported operational items: he finalized an agreement with a local church to serve as a secondary warming/cooling center and said eight volunteers have committed to support EMA, with four of them planning to attend county certification classes starting March 25. The County EMA will offer a Sheltering Class in Acton on May 6 with a 30-person limit and invited neighboring towns to attend. Caruso said that, “in two months, the RAVE system participation has increased 250%.”
Chair Winchell praised the definitions the ordinance provides. The hearing was closed at 6:14 p.m. No adoption vote occurred at the meeting; the record will inform subsequent board and committee steps.
