Conservation committee flags parcel for sale near Wilson Lake boat launch, urges board review

Mike Benjamin, chair of the Town of Acton Conservation/Forest Committee, told the Select Board the committee is asking the board to look closely at a parcel for sale next to the Wilson Lake boat launch and consider action to protect public access. Benjamin said the parcel’s survey corner pin sits in the boat-launch lane and “it could possibly create problems down the road,” potentially affecting boat-launch use and roadside parking.

The committee also presented a draft Conservation/Forest Committee ordinance that Benjamin described as patterned after the town’s road ordinance and intended to be advisory rather than regulatory. He said the committee’s goals—both specific and general—will be posted on the town website. Select Board Liaison Daniel Norwood recognized the committee’s work and the board agreed to review the ordinance packet, which was newly included in the meeting materials.

Benjamin warned the board that if public access to the boat launch were impeded the state could stop restocking Wilson Lake, a change the committee says would affect swimming, fishing and boating. The board said it appreciated the information and indicated it may consider a special town meeting if substantive action is required. The committee’s recommendation is grounded in its mission to protect public recreational access.

The committee asked the board to review the committee goals and the parcel survey materials; the board will place the ordinance on a future agenda for more detailed discussion and possible next steps.
