Katie DeHaven, vice president of the Grimes Health Resource Center, reviewed service statistics and trends and requested an increase in the city's annual support from $8,500 to $9,000.
DeHaven said the center had helped 291 individuals and families with clothing (a 56% increase over the previous year), reported increases in hygiene and household assistance, delivered 5,515 senior meals so far this year, and noted higher demand for transportation to medical appointments. "We appreciate your continued support of $8,500 and we hope that you would consider raising that amount to $9,000," DeHaven said.
Council members asked about volunteer capacity and transportation resources; staff and center representatives said volunteer time and a 20-hour county driver limit constrained service capacity. After brief discussion about whether a formal motion was required, the city manager asked for direction and, "hearing no objection, we will make sure that the budget matches that," indicating staff would incorporate the requested increase into the proposed budget for consideration.
