The Town Administrator told the Board Dec. 8 that York County posted an internal job for a contracted deputy after a promotion, prompting a review of how the towns will provide coverage. The County and towns discussed two options: dissolve the contracted-deputy agreement and return unspent funds to the general fund, or the towns cover an estimated $12,000–$14,000 per town difference to maintain the contract through November 2022.
Officials warned the county’s contracted-deputy program could be dissolved in November 2022 because the sheriff’s department does not have enough deputies to staff all positions. The Board heard that bills are currently prorated and a 14-day contract-change notice had been given; coverage continues but may not include a dedicated deputy if the program is dissolved.
