District tightens misconduct policies to bar employees and volunteers from relationships with students regardless of age

Executive Director of Human Resources Betty Jo Hogan presented a package of five policy revisions (GBBA, GBAA, GBAB, GDD, GDC) designed to remove ambiguity and uniformly prohibit employees and volunteers from engaging in romantic relationships with any enrolled student regardless of age. "We want to make it crystal clear because... you could be fresh out of high school, be dating a student in school, and... we can't have that at all," Hogan said, stressing the changes close a loophole and protect students and the district from headlines and liability.
Trustees supported the revisions, noting that while the state law focuses on certain age thresholds, district policy should remove ambiguity to cover interns, recent graduates and volunteers who may work with students. Motion to approve the revisions passed unanimously on first reading.
