Board reviews donor-funded travel basketball plan; background checks, liability clarified

The Select Board heard a proposal on Nov. 1 to field a donor-funded travel boys’ basketball team after an anonymous donor offered to cover registration, uniforms and practice gear. Recreation Director Samantha Singleton said the donor wants to pay the program costs so the town can offer a travel option where the local middle-school team does not exist.
Board members discussed coach-preference language on the registration form and whether the town should subsidize participation in neighboring towns. Chair David Winchell, Jr. asked the committee to remove language that could limit choices; Singleton said she would remove the coach preference. Roux noted that background checks for coaches had not yet been received and asked for follow-up.
The board also discussed liability and transportation. In public comment, Ray Lopez asked about liability for the travel basketball program; Chair Winchell and Roux clarified that, while the program is a town program and town liability policies apply, "liability doesn’t apply for children being transported to and from games. This is the responsibility of the parent/guardian," Roux said. The Recreation Committee suggested a parent code of conduct to be signed at uniform pickup and a 2024 season survey to assess interest in other sports.
