Acton Select Board adopts updated General Assistance ordinance after state-set increases

The Town of Acton Select Board voted unanimously Nov. 1 to adopt an updated General Assistance ordinance and an accompanying appendix after a public hearing on the changes. Town Administrator Jennifer Roux presented the state-reviewed maximums for York County for 2022–23 and 2023–24 and noted several increases in household, food and housing caps.
Roux outlined the scale of changes: household maximums rose by between $82 and $230 depending on household size (1–5 people); food maximums increased by $10–$60; and housing maximums increased by $80–$222. Roux also said electrical, heating, personal care and supplement maximums did not change. "The Town needs to adopt the General Assistance Ordinance as well; the last adoption was back in 2017," Roux told the board.
Select Board Member Daniel Norwood moved to adopt the revised ordinance and the updated appendix; Edward Walsh seconded the motion. After the vote the clerk stated, "All in favor. Motion carried." The board took no public comment during the hearing, which was closed at 6:09 p.m.
The ordinance implements the state-set figures the town must use for administering General Assistance. The Department of Health and Human Services recently completed the town’s General Assistance audit and issued a compliance letter noting Acton had met requirements.
