From $20,000 storefronts to $8 million block rehabs: examples show program range

Corkins used three examples to show the range of projects the program supports. She described a large Springfield block project totaling more than $8 million that used both federal and state programs to secure almost $2 million in combined credits; a mid-sized St. Johnsbury historic building renovation that received a little over $120,000 in state credits for facade, sprinkler and other code work; and a small Hancock village store that used facade and code credits for roughly $20,000 to reopen after flood damage from Tropical Storm Irene.
The examples were intended to show applicants that projects can vary widely in scale and that relatively small investments (the Hancock example) can still be competitive if they demonstrate local public benefit. Corkins said the program funded projects across big and small municipalities to reflect differing needs and capacities.
