Santa Rosa PD schedules Sept. 17 community meeting on ALPR cameras

Chief John Krieg announced a dedicated community meeting on Sept. 17 at the Utilities Field Operations office (35 Stony Point Road) to discuss the department's automatic license plate reader (ALPR) program and associated policies. "We have 133 flock ALPR cameras that are spread, geographically across the 42 square miles of the city of Santa Rosa," Krieg said, noting national scrutiny and local public concern. He said the department will present camera models, policies and training, and provide handouts at the meeting.
Krieg told council members that the department will make the relevant policies available online and by handout at the meeting. "All of our policies, including all 3 of those policies are there, and you can read them online," Krieg said, referring to the ALPR, public surveillance camera and real-time crime center policies. He said the purpose of the meeting is educational and to collect specific feedback that may inform policy or training changes; the department plans additional outreach through CivicReady and social media.
