Treasurer outlines LED streetlight pilot, estimates about $400 monthly savings

Treasurer Leslie Cummings told the council on Oct. 22 that the town is testing LED conversions for streetlights on Buckhannon Pike and Pennsylvania Avenue to find a balance between reduced wattage and adequate illumination.
Cummings said converting 200-watt fixtures to 130-watt LED lamps would save about $4.43 per light per month, and switching 100-watt fixtures to 50-watt LEDs would save about $2.93 per light per month. She noted the town currently has 126 100-watt lights and 8 200-watt lights and estimated the change could save roughly $400 per month if the lower-watt LEDs provide sufficient lighting.
The treasurer said the project began with changing a single light as a test; the town will evaluate lighting adequacy before wider replacement and discuss other cost-saving ideas at an upcoming supervisors' meeting.
