County approves MOU with Iowa DNR to host MODUS bird-tracking antenna at Environmental Learning Center

Supervisors approved authorizing the chair to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to host a MODUS (motus) bird- and insect-tracking antenna at the county Environmental Learning Center. Conservation director Katie Hammond told the board Muscatine Power and Water and REC are donating a pole and installation assistance; the DNR will install the antenna and the county will provide internet and electricity for the unit.
Hammond said the system will pick up signals from tagged birds, bats and insects within roughly a nine-mile radius, and staff plan to incorporate data and imagery into educational programming at the center. Supervisors praised the interagency collaboration and approved the MOU by voice vote.
