The board heard a financial update that included two items slated for the Aug. 4 meeting: annual school nutrition bid renewals and a recommendation to hold graduation at Akins Ford Arena.
Miss Trunk presented the food-service bid renewals as renewals of current contracts based on previously established terms; staff asked the board to approve those renewals on the Aug. 4 consent agenda.
Miss Houston, the district's chief financial officer, recommended the arena to host graduation, citing enhanced security (weapon detection and security screening), on-site medical staff, climate control to reduce weather-related risks, greater capacity for guests and improved audio-visual systems that better showcase graduates. She said the cost will be "up to $95,000" and that the district will use budgeted general fund monies, prior-year fund balance and graduate charges to pay for the venue.
Board members asked logistical questions about parking and shuttle options; staff said they are exploring shuttle services from local high schools to the arena. Final contractual approval was not taken at the meeting and will be considered at the Aug. 4 board meeting.
