Wythe County tables Azure Park court project after bids exceed budget

After negotiating value engineering with the low bidder, staff reduced the estimate to about $318,000 and requested an additional appropriation of roughly $150,000 to proceed. The project would replace the courts and add three pickleball courts.
Deputy County Administrator (speaker 24) said the county could cut only a small portion (roughly $11,000) but that doing so would likely compromise the underlayment needed to prevent recurring cracking. "We were able to get it down to approximately 318,000," the deputy administrator said, and asked the board whether to appropriate additional funds or call the project off. Several supervisors said they wanted to better understand expected use and recommended sending the proposal back to the Buildings and Grounds committee or the appropriate subcommittee to vet usage and scope; the board voted to table the item and refer it for further study.
Staff said they would return with usage estimates and potential phasing or scope reductions and will poll supervisors on available dates to reconvene the discussion.
