Commissioners weigh hiring mobile maintenance 'rover' to cut mowing contract costs

Grimes County commissioners heard a proposal to add a full-time mobile maintenance position—described in the hearing as a "rover"—to perform mowing, preventive maintenance and other facility tasks and offset part of the current mowing contract.
Rodney, the maintenance representative, outlined duties for the mobile maintenance position including filter changes, condenser coil cleaning and monthly preventive maintenance. Commissioners discussed pay and grade: Rodney said a mobile maintenance technician's minimum salary was about $38,412 under current scales and that a fully loaded annual cost figure staff estimated near $58,400. The Chair framed a possible offset: eliminating much of the $39,100 mowing contract could cover a substantial share of the new position's cost.
The court agreed to reduce the mowing-contract line for the year from $10,000 to $5,500 with the understanding the contract level would be revisited if the mobile position was not added. Commissioners did not formally hire the position during the hearing; staff were directed to provide grade-specific salary figures and further budget language if the court wants to add the role.
