Council authorizes engineering contract for River Road streetlight study; ODOT said signal not warranted

The Huron City Council authorized the city manager to contract with OHM Advisors for survey and engineering services related to the River Road streetlight project, with spending not to exceed $42,100. "ODOT came back and said, nope ... not enough traffic," City manager Hamilton said, adding the city opted to proceed independently: "They're not gonna stop us doing it, but they're just saying if you want it, you pay for it."
Hamilton described the next steps: OHM will design the intersection and provide an engineer's estimate; council will then decide whether to fund construction and bid the work. Hamilton estimated the overall junction improvement could be roughly $200,000, depending on design choices and potential reuse of existing lights. Councilmembers asked about smart controllers, sensors, maintenance costs and whether private developers would be approached for contributions; staff said private contributions are generally avoided to prevent private control over public utilities but that they are exploring all grant and partner opportunities.
