Auditors and staff provided a line-by-line tally of proposed new positions and the upfront equipment/hiring costs. "I have a new person in IT, a dispatcher, a jailer, road and bridge tech, assistant auditor, building and maintenance worker, court reporter, and 2 new sergeants or deputies with the sheriff's department," a commissioner said while reading the list. Staff estimated drive-out (one-time) costs for nine positions at about $763,000.
Commissioners agreed some hires are pressing — particularly a dispatcher and a jailer — while others could be deferred or met through reclassification of existing staff. Staff advised the court that including midyear changes plus the new positions and the $1.20/hr scenario left roughly $1.2 million to work with in one model, but recurring cost pressures (insurance, inmate medical, vehicle coding changes) will constrain the size of any permanent pay increase.
