The Townsend Select Board spent significant time on March 10 discussing advisory committees the board uses to monitor budgets, projects and policy recommendations. The chair described existing committees (highway and general fund) and proposed creating or updating an ethics committee and an IT/cybersecurity committee to review outdated policies and technical contracts.
Board members emphasized that committees are non‑decisionary and that any committee recommendation must come to the select board for formal action. The clerk was asked how and when to post committee openings; the board agreed to notify the public and to appoint committee members at the next meeting. One participant said, “Anybody can sign up for it and or attend,” underscoring the board’s view that committee meetings are open to public participation even before formal appointment.
