Wythe County staff told the board that the Azure Park court improvement bids exceeded the project's $175,000 budget, with the low bid initially at $421,000 before value engineering reduced it to roughly $318,000. Staff proposed a total project budget of about $325,000 and asked supervisors whether to appropriate an additional $150,000 or call the project back for redesign.
"We've been able to get it down to approximately 318,000," staff said, and requested a modest contingency to allow the project to proceed. Board members discussed usage and whether to refer the matter back to the Buildings & Grounds committee to better quantify expected use and to consider scope changes.
The board did not immediately appropriate the extra funds; members asked staff to explore options, including scaling back some elements, locking existing courts for safety, or returning to committee with usage estimates before authorizing additional appropriations.
Next steps: staff will provide additional usage information and options to the board and, if directed, return the project to the Buildings & Grounds committee for review.
