The Acton Select Board was told July 31 that the town will begin work on tax commitment in mid-August, with tax bills expected to go out on or about Sept. 1 and a goal of setting the tax rate at the board's Aug. 28 meeting.
Town Administrator Jennifer Roux said staff, Assessor Marc Roy and the treasurer will meet on Aug. 14 to calculate reserve use and preliminary rates. Roux reported the board had previously been told a possible 12% increase was under consideration; she said offsets such as revenue and assessment adjustments would be used in the final determination. The meeting record does not show a final rate or a board decision on reserves.
Board members did not vote on the tax rate at the July 31 meeting. The timeline provided by Roux frames the next formal steps: an Aug. 14 staff meeting to prepare options and an Aug. 28 board meeting to set the rate. No dollar totals for the town's budget shortfall were provided in the minutes.
