Grant coordinator outlines Bridge 43 repair, guardrail grant and municipal signage award

Townshend’s grant coordinator briefed the Select Board on awarded and pending grants affecting roads and public works. She said the Bridge 43 repair contract has been awarded and work will probably begin in August, and that an RFP for an engineering study and eventual bridge replacement (Bridge 41) will be issued in early June and is expected to be awarded during the July select-board meeting.
The coordinator said the town was selected for a municipal sign package at no local cost and is awaiting the formal award notice. She also noted a Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) guardrail application submitted to replace post-and-cable rail with metal guardrail, covering "2,505 linear feet" and requiring no local match. A UVM capstone transportation improvement study is due in May and the coordinator has been coordinating with the elementary school and Windham Regional to supply local traffic data to the students.
The board discussed timelines and outreach: the grant coordinator said RFPs will be posted and that the town will notify the public prior to road closures. No votes were taken on grants at the meeting; staff will return with award notices and schedule details as they become available.
