Pleasant Grove staff report hiring progress, accessibility race and service projects in Sept. 2 work session

Pleasant Grove City staff used the Sept. 2 work session to update the Council on personnel, recreation and parks activities, and upcoming volunteer events.

Police Chief Keldon Brown reported that employment interviews have concluded, one office employee was hired and another offer was expected that week, and background checks are underway for candidates for one full‑time, two reserve officers and a new part‑time records position. Chief Brown said one vacancy followed the termination of an officer who did not graduate from the police academy.

Recreation Director Megan Zollinger announced the first annual Berserker Blitz wheelchair race and said, “The first annual Berserker Blitz wheelchair race will be held on September 13, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Cook Family Park,” adding the City is partnering with Extreme Motus and pursuing a grant to purchase three off‑road chairs for rentals. Parks Director Deon Giles previewed six National Day of Service projects scheduled for Sept. 13 (trail work, cleanups) and noted a grant‑funded self‑flushing water filter installed at Shannon Field.

Human Resources Manager David Packard reported on employee wellness: roughly 90 employees participated in the Summer Steps Challenge and collectively walked more than 81 million steps; a Wellness Lunch recognizing participants is planned for Sept. 18. City Administrator Scott Darrington noted employee recreation events including an employee pickleball tournament and reminded Council the pool season had just closed to the public with seasonal statistics to follow at a future meeting.
