Mobile honors youth champions, Special Olympians and Ichihara student visitors

Mayor Jerry Gattis opened the meeting by recognizing the Mobile Parks & Recreation track and field teams and city youth sports champions who qualified for regional and national competitions and by calling coaches and athletes forward for photos and proclamations.
"It's truly an honor for me as mayor, along with the city council, to honor young people, who are winners, like you," Mayor Jerry Gattis said as he listed team achievements and invited coaches and players to the dais. Coach Jan Hickman, who the mayor named among the program's leaders, thanked the council and emphasized long-term community involvement: "I love working with kids," he said, noting years of coaching and student scholarships.
The council also recognized the Mobile Revelers therapeutic volleyball team for winning a Special Olympics USA Games gold medal and named Citreon Stallworth for a gold in the long jump. Separately, the council introduced a delegation of students from Mobile's sister city Ichihara, Japan; one student told the chamber she was "very happy to have the opportunity to visit Mobile" and hoped the exchange would strengthen ties.
The recognition segment combined ceremonial proclamations with brief remarks about upcoming travel and competitive events; council members applauded community coaches and volunteers and closed the item by inviting photo opportunities and neighborhood celebration events.
