Pleasant Grove discusses expanding special events, possible full-time City Event Coordinator role

City Administrator Scott Darrington told the council the 2026 special-events list is more robust now that Andi Veenker is serving as City Event Coordinator and that, based on what is envisioned, “there will be a request for more funds for special events in the upcoming budget year,” which he said would come from CARE tax money, not the General Fund. Recreation Director Megan Zollinger and Coordinator Veenker reviewed the calendar and explained that some events are being rethought: Summer-Bration and Bike The Hood are not on the proposed list in their prior formats.
Council Member Cyd LeMone asked the council to consider moving the event coordinator role from part-time to full-time so the city can realize the full potential for larger events without burning out staff. Coordinator Veenker described Summer-Bration as historically vendor-driven and said she wanted to refocus it on community impact; she told the council that “Summer-Bration was previously more of a vendor event, somewhat like a Farmers' Market,” and that changing its format would affect staffing and workload. Council Member Steve Rogers recommended exploring third-party management or a partnership model so the City could play a supporting role for vendor-style events while retaining city-run celebrations that focus on community connection.
The council asked Staff to research options, including potential Request for Proposals (RFPs), coordination with the Strawberry Days committee, and cost implications for a full-time coordinator. Staff said any changes to staffing or budget will be brought back for formal budget deliberations.
