Winter Park Library highlights 15-week tutoring pilot and donor endowment

Melissa Schneider, speaking for the Winter Park Library, described the library's outreach and a tutoring pilot designed for young students who struggle with reading.
"This is a 15 week program...with the end goal being to bring these struggling readers up by a grade level in 15 weeks," Schneider said, noting the model is based on a San Francisco Public Library program and has support from AdventHealth and the Reed Charitable Foundation. She said the library selected Brookshire Elementary as a pilot site and will expand in the fall to Domerick and Lakemont partner schools.
Schneider also highlighted the Reckers—John and Jan—a longtime patron couple who recently made a gift to the library's endowment to support the children’s collection in perpetuity. She described early feedback from parents and teachers as positive, noting that teachers observed improved confidence and classroom participation within four weeks of the program.
Next steps: the library will expand the program in the fall to additional schools and continue coordination with city staff and community partners.
