The Council of the Whole directed staff to prepare a proposal for the county, including a due-diligence period; if the county accepts, city council would consider budget modifications to hire architects and engineers to evaluate retrofit costs.
"Should the county accept our proposal, which includes a due diligence period of time, then we're going to finance and the council... to get a budget modification and approval for the fire department to hire architects and engineers to determine what will it take to retrofit... and to take the office space of the police department and turn that into the new central fire," the police chief said. The chief added that, while details are preliminary, the concept has the potential to save the city "tens of millions of dollars" in long-term capital costs if feasible.
Officials said a potential decision point for whether to move forward could come between April and June 2027; staff-level feasibility work and cost estimates would precede any council vote.
