"We are very, very proud to have them join the Wausau Fire Department," the Chair said after the vote. The appointees must complete standard onboarding steps including a physical and psychological evaluation before starting the academy; Chief Kopp said new hires typically require several weeks of training before being assigned to engines and ambulances.
The commission noted that, after onboarding steps are complete, academy attendance and a roughly four-week on-the-job process mean new firefighters are likely to be fully operational in October–November.
