Kingsbury County adopts rangeland fire assistance resolution, names fire contacts

The Kingsbury County Board of County Commissioners on April 21 adopted Resolution 2026-6 to authorize county personnel to request rangeland fire assistance under South Dakota law. Auditor Echo Steffensen presented the resolution, which lists authorized contacts and appoints the county auditor as County Rural Fire Coordinator.
The resolution names Kristen Longville as Emergency Manager and Sheriff Steve Strande among those authorized to request rangeland fire assistance and sets an effective date of May 20, 2026. Steffensen read the resolution language that: "BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED that the list of individuals set forth below, are hereby authorized to request rangeland fire assistance, on behalf of the County of Kingsbury as specified in SDCL 41-20A-11." Commissioner Corey Lundquist moved to adopt the resolution; Commissioner Troy Nelson seconded the motion and the board carried it by roll call.
The resolution also designates the County Rural Fire Coordinator as a single point of contact for administrative matters such as burn bans and billings until modified or terminated by the board. The board took the action amid ongoing discussion later in the meeting about maintaining the county burn ban for an additional two weeks.
